■RACE: What is the "2025 NGK Spark Plug All Japan Super Formula Championship Round 1 & Round 2"?

In short, it’s the race that decides "Japan’s fastest driver"!

"2025 NGK Spark Plug All Japan Super Formula Championship Round 1 & Round 2"

Super Formula is Japan's premier and fastest formula car racing series.

Because there are no performance differences in the cars, tires, or engines used in the races, it is an exciting competition that combines speed, skill, and strategy.

Now, let me explain in more detail.
So, what exactly is a "formula" car?
A formula car is a lightweight vehicle with almost no unnecessary parts, such as exposed tires and no roof over the driver's seat, designed to run fast.

In contrast, a "box car" has a roof and doors like a regular passenger car, and the tires are covered by the body. For example, the machines in "SUPER GT" fall into this category.

What is "Super Formula"?
"Super Formula" is the top-tier, fastest formula car racing series in Japan.
Looking at the course records at SUZUKA CIRCUIT, F1 holds the fastest time at 1 minute 27.064 seconds, followed by Super Formula at 1 minute 34.442 seconds. The Super Formula car "SF23" is the second fastest after F1 machines, attracting talented drivers and showcasing highly competitive racing.

The history of this top domestic formula began in 1973 and marked its 50th anniversary in 2023.
It is a series that has continued for over 50 years and is attracting attention worldwide.

What are the rules of Super Formula? What are the highlights?
Official Qualifying (QP = Qualifying Position): A time trial to determine the starting positions (grid) for the final race. In this qualifying, you can see purely aggressive driving focused on speed!

Final Race: In the final race, team strategy, such as the timing of tire changes and refueling, determines the outcome!

This event features a "1 event, 2 races" format, with qualifying and the final race held on Saturday and Sunday respectively. In 2025, the championship will be held over 7 events and 12 races across Japan, with the annual champion decided by the total points earned in each race.

Tire Change: During the race, you must change tires at least once. Tire changes are completed in an average of just 6 seconds. Positions can change during the pit stop, so be sure to pay attention to the pit crew’s (vehicle maintenance staff) refined movements!

Overtake System (OTS): Using the OTS temporarily makes the car faster, but it can only be used for up to 200 seconds per race. Once used, it cannot be used again for 100 seconds.

Point System: The winner earns 20 points, 2nd place gets 15 points, 3rd place receives 11 points, and points decrease with each lower position. 10th place earns 1 point, and positions below 11th do not receive points. Points are also awarded in qualifying, with 1st place earning 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point.

Strategies such as tire changes during the race and how to use the Overtake System (OTS) greatly influence the outcome.
The key highlights are the timing of pit stops and when to use the OTS, showcasing the tactical battle between drivers and teams.

■ITEMS "What kind of clothing and items are good?"

Last year around the same time at SUZUKA CIRCUIT, there were even moments when snowflakes fluttered…

We have prepared two recommended outfit patterns, so please use them as a reference!
As the race approaches, be sure to check the weather forecast and the expected temperature for the day!
If it’s still chilly (temperature below 50°F)
  • (1) Hat
Prioritize warmth! Since the sun can get strong during the day, hats with brims are recommended.
  • (2) Outerwear and Bags
If it’s still chilly, we recommend innerwear made of moisture-absorbing and heat-generating materials. Choose a thick outer jacket as well. If it unexpectedly gets warm during the day, you can simply take off one layer.
The neck area is also important. Be sure to prepare a scarf, stole, or neck warmer.
A backpack that leaves both hands free is recommended. Also, a smartphone shoulder bag or waist pouch that makes it easy to take out your phone is convenient to have.
  • (3) Gloves
Gloves that allow you to operate your smartphone while wearing them are recommended.
  • (4) Bottoms
Comfortable and warm pants are essential.
  • (5) Shoes
Above all, wear shoes you are accustomed to and that are easy to walk in. If there is a chance of rain, waterproof shoes will be more comfortable.

What to Bring

  • (1) Mobile Battery
When watching for long hours, battery life can become a concern, so be sure to prepare a fully charged spare battery.
  • (2) Lap Blanket
Since you will be sitting outdoors for long periods, it is convenient to have one that can be folded to a size that fits easily into your bag.
  • (3) Binoculars / Opera Glasses
You can clearly see distant circuit vision screens, the leader tower, pit work, and more.
  • (4) Raincoat, poncho
As a rain measure, a raincoat or poncho is recommended because it takes up less space than an umbrella and keeps both hands free. Even if it seems like there won't be much rain, it's a good idea to have one ready just in case the weather changes suddenly.
  • (5) Plastic Bags
Useful for storing towels and clothes that have become wet from sweat or rain. It can also be helpful in other situations, so let's bring a few that are as large and durable as possible.
  • (6) Seat Cushion
Since you may be sitting for long periods, bring a foldable one that is easy to carry.
  • (7) Towel
An item especially useful on rainy days. Larger ones with hoods are also helpful for sun protection and keeping warm.
  • (8) Hand Warmers / Portable Heaters
Disposable or battery-operated types are both fine. Bring ones that last as long as possible.
  • (9) Cash
Although cashless payments are progressing inside the venue, there may be unexpected purchases or payments that do not accept your digital payment methods.
  • (10) Radio with Earphones
Since the live commentary inside the venue is also broadcast on Suzuka's FM radio station "Suzuka Voice FM 78.3MHz," bringing a radio with earphones allows you to hear clear commentary anywhere.

When It’s Slightly Warm (Temperature Above 10°C)
  • (1) Hat
Even in early spring, there are days with strong sunlight, so it’s better to wear a hat. A wide-brimmed hat is recommended.
  • (2) Outerwear and Bags
If the temperature is on the higher side, a long-sleeve shirt is also an option, but in that case, be sure to bring a long-sleeve you can put on just in case. A backpack that leaves both hands free is recommended. It’s also convenient to have a smartphone shoulder bag or waist pouch that allows easy access to your phone.
  • (3) Bottoms
Comfortable pants for walking are standard. If the temperature is expected to rise, a long skirt is also an option.
  • (4) Shoes
Above all, wear shoes you are used to and that are comfortable for walking. Even if the temperature is high, sandals are not recommended. If there is a chance of rain, waterproof shoes will be more comfortable.

What to Bring

  • (1) Mobile Battery
When watching for long hours, battery life can become a concern, so be sure to prepare a fully charged spare battery.
  • (2) Long-sleeved outerwear
It can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so it’s recommended to have something ready to put on just in case.
  • (7) Towel
An essential item for wiping sweat on hot days and rainwater on rainy days. Larger towels with hoods are also useful for sun protection and keeping warm.
  • (8) Sunscreen
Since the sun can be strong even in early spring, be sure to apply sunscreen thoroughly before going out. Bring some with you to reapply on site as well.
  • (9) Cash
Although cashless payments are progressing inside the venue, there may be unexpected purchases or payments that do not accept your digital payment methods.
  • (10) Radio with Earphones
The live commentary inside the venue is also broadcast on Suzuka's FM radio station "Suzuka Voice FM 78.3MHz," so if you bring a radio with earphones, you can listen to clear commentary anywhere.
