STEP1 "What kind of event is JAFGP?"
In short, it's a race to determine the fastest driver in Japan!
JAFGP. The official name is "2024 All Japan Super Formula Championship Round 8-9, 23rd JAF Suzuka Grand Prix".The final round (Sat-Sun double header) of "Super Formula", the top and fastest formula car racing series in Japan.
Let's explain a little more.
- What is a "Formula" car in the first place?
-
"Formula" originally means "standard", and a formula car is a car that is made according to the "standard of a specific race".
The design features include "exposed tires" and "no roof covering the cockpit," with very few parts that are unrelated to purely "going fast," resulting in a lightweight structure. Generally, it is a single-seater with a mid-engine layout (the engine is located near the center of the machine) and is equipped with large aerodynamic parts that control airflow at the front and rear.
The opposite of this formula car is what is commonly referred to as a "box car." This has the shape of a regular passenger vehicle, meaning it has a roof and doors, and the tires are covered by the body, such as the machines in "SUPER GT."
The course record for the 4-wheel, 5.807km Suzuka Circuit Racing Course is 1 minute 27.064 seconds in F1. The next fastest is 1 minute 34.442 seconds in Super Formula. The course record for the top class GT500 in the fastest race for box cars, "SUPER GT", is 1 minute 44.112 seconds, showing a difference of nearly 10 seconds from Super Formula, demonstrating its speed.
- "What is Super Formula?"
-
Super Formula is the premier and fastest formula car racing series in Japan. The Super Formula machine, SF23, has speed second only to F1 cars, and it attracts talented drivers, leading to high-level competitions that are gaining attention worldwide.
Unlike F1 where each team produces their own chassis, the chassis used in Super Formula is produced by the Italian manufacturer "Dallara" and is common to all teams. The engines used are made by two manufacturers, TOYOTA and Honda, but due to regulations, there is generally no difference in performance. Therefore, the driver's skill and the team's strategy determine the outcome.
- "What is JAF Grand Prix?"
-
In the 1960s, while the "Hako car" races became popular, the popularity of Formula car races was not great. Therefore, as a foundation for promoting Formula races and attracting the F1 Grand Prix, the JAF Grand Prix, organized by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), started in 1969.
The first "JAF Suzuka Grand Prix" was held at Suzuka Circuit in 1974 as the top race of the domestic top formula series, and every year many great battles were fought as the second most prestigious race after the Japanese Grand Prix. However, the history came to an end with the last event held in 1986.
After 28 years, it was revived as a race of Super Formula in 2014. Until now, winning the JAF Suzuka Grand Prix has been a great honor for participating drivers.
- What are the rules of Super Formula?
-
In 2024, a total of 9 races will be held at 5 venues in Japan, with the annual champion being determined by the total points earned in each race.
Points are given in order from the driver who ran the designated number of laps the fastest in each round. If you win, you can earn 20 points, 2nd place is 15 points, 3rd place is 11 points... and the points you can earn will decrease as your ranking goes down. Only 1 point can be earned for 10th place, and no points will be given for 11th place or below. In addition, in the qualifying round that determines the grid (starting position) for the final race, 3 points are given for the fastest time in 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, and 1 point for 1st place.
During the race, each driver has a minimum of one "tire change obligation". In order to change tires, it is necessary to move to a place called "pit" located on the side of the course, but it is a big time loss, so it is very important to decide when to change.
There is a mechanism called "overtake system (OTS)" in Super Formula. When using OTS, the car temporarily becomes faster, but it can only be used for up to 200 seconds per race. Furthermore, once it is used, it cannot be used again for 120 seconds.
Timing using OTS can be checked on the Super Formula app "SFgo". "SFgo" has many convenient features for watching races, so be sure to download it in advance.
- What kind of players are there?
-
There are 12 teams in Super Formula, each with 1-2 players. All of them are top-class Japanese players.
No matter what sport it is, having a "favorite" definitely adds more excitement to cheering. This time, we will pick four players as the ones to watch, but there are also many other attractive players. Many of them are actively sharing on social media, so please do some research and find your "favorite driver".
STEP2 "Which ticket should I buy?"
To watch a race event, you need to purchase a "ticket" for that event. However, there are various types of tickets, so many people may say, "I don't really know which one to buy even after looking at the ticket list..."
So, let me introduce tickets that are recommended for those who are watching the JAFGP for the first time and for beginners.
■The JAFGP is guaranteed if you purchase the 'V2 Reserved Seat Ticket'!
To conclude, if you are unsure about choosing tickets for the JAFGP, you can't go wrong with the 'V2 Reserved Seat Spectator Ticket (V2 Seat)'! The reasons are (1) you can watch from various locations and (2) it is reasonably priced compared to other big races. Especially, people aged 23 and under pay the same price as the Spectator ticket (non-reserved seats), so there's no reason not to choose it.General Admission Ticket

STEP 3: What kind of clothing and items are good?
Of course, it's basic to watch freely in your favorite style, but if you're unsure, try using this as a reference!Attire
- (1) Hat
- Even in autumn, there are days when the sun is strong, so it's better to wear a hat. A wide-brimmed hat is recommended.
- (2) Jacket and Bag
- If the temperature is on the warmer side, short sleeves are also an option, but in that case, make sure to bring a long-sleeve shirt that you can throw on if needed. A backpack that leaves your hands free is recommended. Additionally, having a smartphone shoulder bag or a waist pouch can be convenient for easy access to your phone.
- (3) Bottoms
- Comfortable pants are a staple. If the temperature is expected to rise, a long skirt is also an option.
- (4) Shoes
- Anyway, wear comfortable shoes that you are used to. Sandals are not recommended even if the temperature is high. If there is a chance of rain, waterproof shoes will be more comfortable.
Belongings
- (1) Mobile Battery
- During long hours of watching, you may worry about the battery, so make sure to prepare a fully charged spare battery.
- (2) Long-sleeved jacket
- In autumn, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so it's recommended to have something ready to wear just in case.
- (3) Binoculars / Opera Glasses
- You can clearly see the distant circuit vision, leader tower, and pit work.
- (4) Kappa Poncho
- As a rain measure, a raincoat or poncho is recommended because it takes up less space than an umbrella and keeps both hands free. Even if it seems like there won't be much rain, it's a good idea to have one ready just in case the weather changes suddenly.
- (5) Plastic Bag
- Useful for storing towels and clothes that have become wet from sweat or rain. It can also be helpful in other situations, so let's bring a few that are as large and durable as possible.
- (6) Seat Cushion
- Since long periods of sitting are expected, let's bring a portable folding chair.
- (7) Towel
- An essential item for wiping sweat on hot days and rainwater on rainy days. A larger one with a hood is also useful for sun protection and warmth.
- (8) Sunscreen
- Even in autumn, there are days when the sun is strong, so be sure to apply sunscreen thoroughly before going out. Don't forget to bring some for reapplication on-site.
- (9) Cash
- Although cashless transactions are progressing within the venue, there may be instances where shopping or payments do not support the digital payment methods you have on hand in unexpected places.
- (10) Radio with Earphones
- The live commentary inside the venue will also be broadcast on Suzuka's FM radio station "Suzuka Voice FM 78.3MHz," so if you bring a radio with earphones, you can listen to clear commentary anywhere.
STEP 4: How should I get there?
During the JAFGP event period, traffic congestion is expected on the roads around SUZUKA CIRCUIT, so it is recommended to use public transportation such as trains or buses if possible.Either way, make sure to check the access methods in advance so you won't be rushed on the day.
Access from Outside the Prefecture [Public Transportation]
Access from Outside the Prefecture [Car/Bike]
Travel time from major urban areas in Mie Prefecture
・About 40 minutes from Yokkaichi city center・Approximately 30 minutes from Tsu City
・About 60 minutes from Iga city center
・About 55 minutes from Matsusaka city
・1 hour and 10 minutes from Ise City
*This is the time during regular periods without traffic congestion.
Advance Parking Ticket
Advance parking tickets for the JAFGP sell out quickly. Be aware that the parking lot often fills up by the afternoon on the day of the event.
STEP 5: What should I do at the entrance gate?
You can check the detailed entry methods for each ticket on the page linked below.
STEP 6 What is the recommended way to spend a day?
If you're going to watch for the first time and wondering how to enjoy it, we have some recommended plans for you!In other races, many have "qualifying on Saturday and the final on Sunday," so Sunday tends to carry more weight.
However, the JAFGP will have the "Super Formula Round 8 qualifying and final" on November 9 (Sat) and the "Super Formula Round 9 qualifying and final" on November 10 (Sun) held independently, so if possible, I would like you to come for both days and witness the two races, which will be the biggest highlight of this season's Super Formula...!
So, it is a two-day plan.
November 9 (Sat) Main Event 'Super Formula Round 8'
On the first day, November 9 (Sat), the qualifying and final for "Super Formula Round 8" will be held as mentioned above. As the season reaches its climax, the results of this race will significantly change the landscape of the battle for the annual championship in 2024, making it a must-see.
Here is the recommended schedule for the first day.
- 8:30
- Arrival at Main Gate
- 9:05-9:47
- Watch Super Formula Round 8 Qualifying
- 9:50 AM - 1:00 PM
- Enjoy at SUZUKA CIRCUIT PARK
- 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
- Lunch
- 14:30-
- Super Formula Round 8 Final Race (31 laps or 75 minutes) Viewing
- 5:00 PM-
- Return home (or to accommodation)
8:30 Arrival at Main Gate
The opening time of the Main Gate is 7:55, but it's okay if you don't enter right at the opening time. Arriving around 8:30 will not hinder your ability to watch the qualifying rounds.
After presenting the QR code of your ticket at the gate, enjoy the scenery of SUZUKA CIRCUIT as you head to your designated seating area for viewing with your ticket.
9:05-9:47 "Super Formula Round 8 Qualifying Viewing"
Super Formula has almost no difference in vehicle performance, making overtaking difficult. The qualifying position greatly affects the final race, so you cannot miss the qualifying.
The qualifying round competes for the time of one lap around the course. The first qualifying round "Q1" is divided into Group A and Group B, each conducted for 10 minutes, and the top 6 cars from each group advance to the second qualifying round "Q2" to compete for the top positions.
Q2 lasts for 7 minutes, and the car that sets the fastest lap time secures the "pole position," allowing it to start from the most advantageous position for the race.
9:50‐13:00 'Enjoy at SUZUKA CIRCUIT PARK'
After the qualifying rounds, how about heading to the SUZUKA CIRCUIT PARK? The JAFGP viewing tickets come with a "Park Passport" valid for both days of the weekend, so you shouldn't miss out on this. This time, I will introduce three recommended attractions located in the area close to the Racing Course.Recommended Attraction 1: 'Circuit Wheel'
Standing at a height of 50 meters above ground and 100 meters above sea level, this symbol of SUZUKA CIRCUIT towers near the final corner, offering a panoramic view of Ise Bay and the Racing Course. From this height, you can enjoy a very interesting view during race events.
Recommended Attraction ➁ 'Honda RACING Gallery'
An exhibition facility that opened on April 5, 2024 (Fri). Through the display of historical machines, engines, and power units that have competed in actual races, centered around Formula 1, which Honda has been challenging for 60 years, you can experience Honda's commitment to victory and the technology honed in pursuit of that victory.
Recommended Attraction ③ 'DUEL GP'
Located just north of the Honda RACING Gallery. It resembles a go-kart, allowing you to hop into a two-seater machine and enjoy a one-on-one battle with a rival, but it is actually a coaster attraction. You need to handle the steering carefully in the corners, or you could easily spin out and lose time, so delicate handling is required.
13:00-14:00 'Lunch'
It's a dilemma whether to choose the temporary "race food" stalls set up around the racing course or to use the restaurants in the park that have permanent chairs and tables.
During the JAFGP period, various gourmet shops and food trucks will line the course area. There are a variety of options including rice dishes, noodles, skewers, and sweets, all available for takeout.
Starting at 13:30, there will be a start procedure for the Super Formula Round 8 final race (including events such as machine warm-ups and the race start ceremony), so it is nice to sit in your seat and enjoy a meal while watching.
Around mid-October, when the vendor information is gathered, the "Food Map" will be posted on this official site, so please use it as a reference for choosing your lunch menu.
14:30 - "Super Formula Round 8 Final Race (31 laps or 75 minutes) Viewing"
Basically, the driver who completes the full Suzuka Circuit course of 5.807 km the fastest in 31 laps will be the winner. Note that this race has a maximum duration of 75 minutes, so in the event of an accident that causes the race to be temporarily halted, it is possible for the race to end without completing 31 laps, so keep that in mind.
After this Round 8, only Round 9, the "JAF Suzuka Grand Prix," which will be held the following day, remains for the 2024 season.
17:00 - "Return Home (or to Accommodation)"
However, since other fans will also be leaving at this time, if you arrive by car, the surrounding roads will be congested. Therefore, as long as time permits, it is also a good idea to stroll around the venue and enjoy the atmosphere or look for souvenirs to avoid the traffic.
On November 9, 2024 (Sat), the sunset in Suzuka City will be at 16:52, and the Park Opening Hours will be until 17:30.
November 10 (Sun) Main Event 'Super Formula Round 9 (Final Round) JAF Suzuka Grand Prix'
On the second day, November 10 (Sun), the 2024 Super Formula Final Round, Round 9, "JAF Suzuka Grand Prix" will finally take place.
In Super Formula, the maximum points that can be earned in a single race is 23 (with a maximum of 3 points for qualifying and 20 points for the race). It is rare for a driver to pull ahead and secure the championship with a lead greater than that before the Final Round, and each year, this final round, the "JAF Suzuka Grand Prix," serves as the decisive battle.
So, here is the recommended schedule for the second day.
- 8:45
- Arrival at the gate (Main Gate, South Gate, Poolside Gate)
- 9:15‐9:57
- Watch Super Formula Round 9 Qualifying
- 10:00-13:00
- GP Square Course Side Stroll
- 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
- Lunch
- 14:30
- Super Formula Round 9 Final Race (31 laps or 75 minutes) Viewing
- 17:00
- Return Home
8:45 Arrival at the Gate (Main Gate, South Gate, Pool Side Gate)
"South Gate" is located right next to GP Square, making it especially convenient for those coming from Ise Railway's "Suzuka Circuit Ino Station".
The "Poolside Gate" is not far from the South Gate, but it is on the north side of the road, so be careful as it leads to the park area.
9:15‐9:57 "Watch Super Formula Round 9 Qualifying"
This will be a very important session where mistakes are not allowed, especially for drivers who still have a chance at the annual championship, so let's pay attention.
We recommend downloading the free app 'RACE NOW!' on your smartphone to easily check 'who is running where' and 'what the provisional rankings are.'
>For details on RACE NOW, click here (external link)
There is also an app called 'SFgo' that is perfect for watching Super Formula, which has various additional features. *Main features are paid.
>For details on SFgo, click here
10:00‐13:00 'GP Square Course Side Stroll'
At GP Square, there are PR booths for automobile manufacturers and parts manufacturers, booths for each Super Formula team, and fan goods shops for teams and drivers, featuring booths that are unique to the Super Formula period.
Especially the merchandise shop has items that are not usually available for purchase, so be sure to check it out. After the final race, it tends to get crowded and many items may sell out, so it is recommended to visit before this time if possible.
If you have extra time, it’s a good idea to walk along the course side to check out the views from various spectator seats.
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM 'Lunch'
On the 9th (Sat), we introduced information around the Racing Course, but if it is crowded or the weather is not good, we recommend the restaurants within SUZUKA CIRCUIT PARK.
"Putti Town Kitchen" and "Bun Bun Pancake Shop" offer indoor dining, making them especially convenient on cold days or when visiting with children. This season, there is also a lineup of "autumn limited-time menu" items, so be sure to check it out.
> Park Restaurant Autumn Limited Time Menu
14:30 Super Formula Round 9 Final Race (31 laps or 75 minutes) Viewing
The race rules are the same as Round 8 the day before, 31 laps or 75 minutes. What kind of conclusion awaits us?
After the award ceremony, a season-end ceremony unique to the Final Round is also scheduled, so let's enjoy it as much as time allows.
5:00 PM "Return Home"
* "Recommended Plan" Version 1.0 (Scheduled for updates with future event additions, etc.)
