Final Year of Multi-Make Tires
Yokohama and Dunlop Aim for a Chance at Suzuka.
The Decisive Tires and the Future of the GT500 Class Tire Wars
In the GT500 class this season, three brands—Bridgestone, Yokohama, and Dunlop—are fiercely competing in the tire battle. In the current GT500 class, where common parts have increased, the choice of tires brought to the race and the matching of the selected tires with the track conditions have become major factors that determine the outcome.
Among them, Bridgestone, which holds an overwhelming share with 12 out of 14 cars this year, has dominated the podium and the results have been skewed, but there is a possibility that the situation will change at Round. 5 Suzuka. Although only one car each, a great opportunity has arrived for the Yokohama-equipped No. 19 TGR TEAM WedsSport BANDOH and the Dunlop-equipped No. 64 Modulo Nakajima Racing. Suzuka features many medium- to high-speed corners, making it the most demanding layout on tires among domestic circuits. Furthermore, since the event takes place in August, the hottest time of the year, the tires face even harsher conditions. Given that Yokohama and Dunlop have been developing their tires seemingly tailored to these conditions and have strong track records, there is a possibility that the GT500 class battle at Suzuka could break the current dominance of Bridgestone.
In fact, at Round 3 in Suzuka in 2023, the KONDO RACING Realize Corporation ADVAN Z, which was equipped with Yokohama tires at the time, set the fastest time in qualifying. However, it did not secure pole position due to failing the vehicle inspection over fuel tank capacity, which was unrelated to speed, but its outright speed was undoubtedly high.
And in that race, another car equipped with Yokohama tires, car number 19, TGR TEAM WedsSport BANDOH, achieved victory for the first time in seven years.
Takuya Izawa, who secured pole positions in qualifying in 2020 and 2021 and is currently the team director of Modulo Nakajima Racing, is also highly passionate about this upcoming Suzuka race.
“From the pre-season test at Sepang, Malaysia, I got a very good impression of the compatibility between the PRELUDE-GT and Dunlop tires. Although we struggled more than expected in the opening round and Round 2, we reviewed the data after Round 2 and conducted several tire tests to identify the causes. There is no doubt that Dunlop has a good affinity with Suzuka, and since the pavement was renewed this year, it’s a difficult factor to predict how much that will affect GT racing. However, since we were able to deliver high performance at SUGO last year after its pavement was renewed, considering various combinations, I believe Suzuka is a race where we must achieve good results.”
